Buccaneers GM Trolls Adam Schefter After Breaking News on Signing Veteran Quarterback
It's not often that ESPN's Adam Schefter, one of the most well-known reporters in sports, is beaten to the punch on any breaking news.
As it turns out, the only way Schefter could get beaten to a story's source is by the source itself. In this case, it was Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht.
Licht did his best impression of a sports reporter delivering the news that the Buccaneers had agreed to terms on a contract with veteran quarterback John Wolford on Friday. "Bucs have agreed to terms with John Wolford, per source," Licht wrote in a post onto his account on X, formerly Twitter.
Then, obviously enjoying ceding his GM's cap for one of an NFL insider, Licht had a little fun with Schefter.
Well done by Licht. Even NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Schefter's main competition and another well-known insider, reacted to Licht's scoop, asking him for his source.
In all seriousness, Licht has every reason to be in a good mood, as he's managed to retain the likes of QB Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and linebacker Lavonte David, a huge chunk of the core that led Tampa Bay to a playoff appearance in 2023.
