Giants Reportedly Considering Moving On From Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones signed a $160 million contract last year, has proven he can win a road playoff game, and the New York Giants' public posture has been that he will be the starting quarterback this fall. But the franchise has the the sixth pick in next month's quarterback-rich NFL Draft and Jones' limitations have been on full display during his first five seasons. There is no reason to be confident chiseling that plan into stone.
That lack of confidence has grown after a report from ESPN's Jordan Raanan stating the Giants "seem to be done building around" Jones due to concerns about his injury history. In the past three seasons, Jones has undergone two neck surgeries and sustained a torn ACL. Last season he was only able to start six games and lost five of them.
Raanan also reports the team met with all six of the projected top quarterbacks in the 2024 draft class.
The problem for New York, if the organization does wish to move on from Jones, is that neither Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels will be around at No. 6. Williams is expected to go No. 1 overall to the Chicago Bears, while Daniels is not expected to drop out of the top five.
Arizona own the fourth pick and has put a lot of eggs in the Kyler Murray basket, so they might be open to a trade down. The Minnesota Vikings have the 11th and 23rd picks and there has been chatter connecting them to Michigan's J.J McCarthy. Throw in the fact they have far more pick inventory than the Giants have after acquiring Brian Burns via a trade, and Minnesota seems better suited to wheel and deal come draft day.
Even if the Giants wanted to move up, they could easily be outbid. Their best course of action may be to trade down and select one of the lower-projected quarterbacks like Washington's Michael Penix Jr. or South Carolina's Spencer Rattler.
It will be interesting to see how a franchise at a crossroads chooses to proceed.
