The New York Jets needed help off the edge after linebacker and Bryce Huff departed in free agency. They found it on Friday by landing Haason Reddick in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

New York will send a conditional 2026 third-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Reddick, who had been granted permission to seek a trade. After the Eagles signed Huff away from the Jets and reworked Josh Sweat's contract, the two-time Pro Bowler appeared to be the odd man out. The traded pick could become a second-rounder if Reddick plays 67.5 percent of New York's defensive snaps and records 10 sacks.

Reddick blossomed in Philadelphia after signing a three-year, $45 million deal in 2022. He had a career-high 16 sacks during his first season with the Eagles, while forcing five fumbles and recovering three. That performance earned him second team All-Pro honors. In 2023, the 29-year-old played in all 17 games, recording 38 tackles, 11 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Pro Football Focus gave him a 79.7 grade for the season, which came in below his 90.4 grade from 2022, but was the second-best mark of his career.

As a team, New York's 48 sacks ranked seventh leaguewide in 2023. Huff's 10 sacks led the Jets, so his departure left a significant hole in their pass rush. There was still plenty of talent on the roster, with John Franklin-Myers, Jermaine Johnson, Micheal Clemons and 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald. But those four only combined to register 14.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss last season. Reddick is likely to figure in heavily, as head coach Robert Saleh prefers to rotate a number of players off the edge.

The Jets are in "win now" mode as quarterback Aaron Rodgers enters the final two years of his contract. They have made move this offseason to reflect that mentality. New York has acquired tackles Morgan Moses and Tyron Smith, signed receiver Mike Williams and now worked a trade for Reddick. The franchise is going for it despite the underwhelming results in 2023 with Rodgers sidelined.

Questions remain for the Jets as the offseason continues, but the Reddick trade has answered one of them.
