49ers @ Rams Week 2 Live Blog

Good luck, Rams.

INGLEWOOD -- This is the live blog of the San Francisco 49ers' Week 2 road game against the Los Angeles Rams. This will be updated frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

12:00 Here are the 49ers' inactives:
QB Brandon Allen
OL Nick Zakelj
LB Jalen Graham
RB Tyrion Davis-Price
DL Kalia Davis

Rookie linebackers Dee Winters and Jalen Winters will make their career debuts with the 49ers.

The 49ers should win this game easily. The Rams can't move the ball on the ground, plus they're missing their No. 1 weapon, Cooper Kupp, who's on I.R. So their offense will be one dimensional. Which means their quarterback, Matthew Stafford, will have to win the game from the pocket. And he'll be under constant pressure, because the 49ers' defensive line is outstanding. So I expect Stafford will throw a couple interceptions. The only way the Rams can win is if they give Stafford a clean pocket so he can take advantage of the 49ers' weaknesses in their secondary, and if Brock Purdy committs a couple turnovers, which could happen -- he turned the ball over quite a bit during training camp. But as long as the 49ers get the ball out of his hands quickly and use Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey to pick up yards after the catch, Purdy shouldn't be in a position to turn the ball over. This is his first time facing the Rams defense and Aaron Donald, so the beginning of the game could be adventure. But once Purdy settles in, the 49ers should cruise to victory.

12:24 Here are the Rams' inactives: RB Cam Akers, RB Zach Evans, OL Kevin Dotson, OL Warren McClendon Jr., DE Desjuan Johnson.

FIRST QUARTER

The Rams win the toss and defer. The 49ers will receive the opening kickoff.

1:15 On 3rd and 7 from the Rams 35,  Brandon Aiyuk runs a slant, catches a 12-yard pass, picks up the first down, lands on his shoulder and injures himself. He walks off the field slowly.

1:19 On 2nd and 2 from the Rams 14, Christian McCaffrey cuts behind left guard Aaron Banks and scores. McCaffrey is so freaking good.

49ers 7, Rams 0.

1:32 On 3rd and 13 from the 49ers 30, Stafford completes a screen pass to Puka Nacua, who runs for 6 yards. Then the Rams kick a field goal. Stafford was 5 of 6 on that drive, and four his completions beat cornerback Ambry Thomas.

49ers 7, Rams 3.

1:39 On 1st and 10 from the 49ers 36, McCaffrey runs around the left end for 51 yards. Brandon Aiyuk is back in the game, by the way.

SECOND QUARTER

1:46 On 3rd and 6 from the Rams 9, Brandon Aiyuk drops a pass. He looks injured. Next play, Jake Moody makes a 27-yard field goal.

49ers 10, Rams 3.

1:50 Jake Moody shanks the kickoff out of bounds. The Rams start at their 40.

1:56 On 1st and 10 from the Rams 13, the 49ers make a tackle in the backfield but Dre Greenlaw is flagged after the play for taunting -- a typical Greenlaw mistake. Next play, Stafford throws a six-yard touchdown pass to running back Kyren Williams, and the game is tied.

49ers 10, Rams 10.

2:04 On 2nd and 9 from the Rams 45, Aiyuk runs a sluggo on the right and is wide open deep for a touchdown by Purdy overthrows him by five yards. Purdy is much better throwing to his left. Next play, Purdy gets sacked by Byron Young, then the 49ers punt. The Rams take over at their 12.

2:23 On 3rd 1 from the 49ers 4, Kyren Williams powers into the end zone for his second touchdown of the day. Suddenly the 49ers can't stop the run. They have 1:45 and no timeouts left to put together a scoring drive. Then the Rams get the ball to start the second half. Huge series for the 49ers right here.

49ers 10, Rams 17.

2:33 On the final play of the first half, Purdy sneaks into the end zone from a half yard out for the touchdown.

49ers 17, Rams 17.

THIRD QUARTER

2:54 On 3rd and 5 from the Rams 48, Isaiah Oliver tackles Kyren Williams after a three-yard catch. On 4th and 2 from the 49ers 49, the Rams take the Delay of Game penalty rather than attempting to pick up the first down. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 18.

3:00 On 3rd and 10 from the 49ers 18, Purdy overthrows a wide open Jauan Jennings deep down the middle of the field. Should have been a big gain. Instead, the 49ers go 3 and out. After the punt, the Rams take over at their 28.

3:09 On 2nd and 16 from the 49ers 31, Stafford throws a pass to Kyren Williams which he drops and tips to Isaiah Oliver who makes the interception. The 49ers take over at their 28. Huge break.

3:16 On 3rd and 7 from the Rams 39, Purdy overthrows another open deep touchdown pass, this time to Deebo Samuel. The 49ers would be winning 31-17 if Purdy could complete a deep pass today. Instead, it's 20-17 after a 57-yard field goal by Nick Moody.

49ers 20, Rams 17.

3:21 On 3rd and 10 from the Rams 25, Fred Warner blitzes and sacks Stafford for a loss of 10. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 26.

FOURTH QUARTER

3:30 On 1st and 10 from the Rams 11, Purdy throws a swing pass to Deebo Samuel in the left flat, and Samuel breaks a couple tackles and scores. The play is ruled a run because the pass traveled backward.

49ers 27, Rams 17.

3:44 On 1st and 10 from the 49ers 19, Kevin Givens pressures Stafford who gets flagged for intentional grounding. A few plays later, the Rams make a 58-yard field goal with 7:13 left.

49ers 27, Rams 20.

3:50 On 3rd and 2 from the 49ers 33, Purdy throws to Deebo Samuel running a quick slant route and the pass is high and behind him. Incomplete. Niners go 3 and out. After the punt, the Rams take over at their 20 with 5:29 left.

3:53 On 3rd and 5 from the Rams 25, Deommodore Lenoir intercepts Stafford over the middle. The 49ers take over at the LA 15.

3:57 On 3rd and 3 from the Rams 8, Purdy's pass gets knocked down. Next play, Moody makes a 26-yard field goal. I'm heading down to the locker room. Stay tuned for the 49ers grades.

49ers 30, Rams 20.
