49ers vs. Packers Playoff Live Blog

Sunny days -- everybody loves them. Tell me, baby, can you stand the rain?
In this story:

SANTA CLARA -- This is the live blog for the San Francisco 49ers' divisional playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

3:20 The 49ers just announced that they've placed defensive end Clelin Ferrell on the Injured Reserve List, which means he's out for the rest of the season. Ferrell was the 49ers' starting defensive end opposite Nick Bosa because he's the 49ers' best run defender at that position. Now the 49ers will have to start Chase Young, who has been a rotational pass rusher since they traded for him midseason. He'll have to play with much more effort and stamina than he has the past few months.

3:45 Here are the 49ers' inactives: Matt Pryor, Ronnie Bell, Jalen Graham, Samuel Womack, Alex Barrett, T.Y. McGill and Brandon Allen.

3:48 Here are the Packers' inactives: Malik Heath, A.J. Dillon, Benny Sapp III, Kingsley Enagbare, Brenton Cox Jr. and Caleb Jones.

3:49 This means Packers No. 1 cornerback Jaire Alexander is active for today's game. He missed all week of practice with an ankle injury.

3:50 There's just a light drizzle coming down right now, but the rain is supposed to pick up any minute and continue throughout the game. In addition, there appears to be a strong wind, which also could affect passes and kicks. The Packers have to be pleased with the weather and the 49ers have to be frustrated because it could level the playing field.

5:13 The Packers win the toss and elect to receive the opening kickoff.

FIRST QUARTER

5:25 On 3rd and 8 from the 49ers 11, Charvarius Ward breaks up a pass in the end zone intended for Romeo Doubs. Clutch play by Ward. Afterward, the Packers make a 29-yard field goal. That was a methodical 13-play drive in which the Packers mostly ran the ball. Seems difficult to pass right now because of the rain.

49ers 0, Packers 3.

5:36 On 1st and 15 from the 49ers 35, Brock Purdy throws a pass that should get intercepted by Darnell Savage drops it. Could have been a game changer. Next play, Deebo Samuel injures his head and leaves the game. Next play, 3rd and 7, Brock Purdy spins around and runs into a sack. Then the 49ers punt, and the Packers take over at their 18 after a 12-yard return.

5:45 Samuel has been cleared to return.

SECOND QUARTER

5:53 On 4th and 1 from the 49ers 14-yard line, Jordan Love attempts a quarterback sneak and goes nowhere. The 49ers take over on downs.

6:02 On 3rd and 6 from the Packers 32, Purdy scrambles to his right and throws a touchdown pass on the run to George Kittle, who beats Darnell Savage. Beautiful play by Purdy, who had struggled until this play.

49ers 7, Packers 3.

6:05 Now Deebo Samuel has a shoulder injury. His return is questionable.

6:13 On 3rd and goal from the 11, Javon Hargrave pressures Love and forces him to throw the ball out of the back of the end zone. Next play, the Packers make a 29-yard field goal attempt.

49ers 7, Packers 6.

6:31 The Packers deflect Jake Moody's 48-yard field goal attempt and it's no good. The kick was very low. Moody has now missed three kicks in a row.

THIRD QUARTER

6:49 On 3rd and 4 from the 49ers 31, Purdy throws an incomplete pass as he gets hit by a pass rusher who beat Colton McKivitz, and the 49ers go 3 and out. After the punt, the Packers take over at their 25.

6:51 Deebo Samuel is out with a shoulder injury. He will not return.

7:02 On 3rd and 15 from the 49ers' 40, Love throws up a deep prayer and Ambry Thomas bails him out with his second pass interference penalty of the game -- this one for 41 yards. Next play, Love throws a touchdown pass to a wide open Bo Melton. The 49ers look extremely rusty.

49ers 7, Packers 13.

7:09 On 1st and 10 from the Packers 39, McCaffrrey bursts through the Packers defensive line and sprints to the end zone for the touchdown. Finally, Shanahan gets McCaffrey running downhill and he scores.

49ers 14, Packers 13.

7:17 The Packers return the kickoff 73 yards and fumble, they recover at the 49ers' 20. And on 2nd and goal from the 2, Logan Ryan gives up a touchdown catch to tight end Tucker Kraft in the right flat. Then the Packers go for two and convert it when Love hits a wide open Aaron Jones in the right flat.

49ers 14, Packers 21.

7:24 On 3rd and 5 from the 49ers 18, Purdy airmails a throw intended for Jauan Jennings and nearly gets intercepted but Keisean Nixon drops it. That's the second dropped pick of the game for Purdy. He's not playing particularly well. After the punt, the Packers take over at their 37.

7:29 On 3rd and 11 from the Packers 48, Love throws behind Kraft who tips the ball to Dre Greenlaw who picks it off. Huge play. The 49ers take over at the Green Bay 48.

FOURTH QUARTER

7:39 Jake Moody makes a 52-yard field goal on the first play of the quarter.

49ers 17, Packers 21.

7:43 On 3rd and 2 from the 49ers 33, Love throws an errant pass intended for Aaron Jones and the Packers go 3 and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 25.

7:52 On 3rd and 10 from the Packers 40, Purdy throws a terrible pass intended for Ray Ray McCloud and the 49ers punt. Purdy has not played well in this game. After the punt, the Packers take over at their 10.

7:59 The Packers miss a 41-yard field goal wide left. The 49ers take over at their 31 with 6:18 left.

8:11 On 3rd and 1 from the Packers 6-yard line, McCaffrey bursts into the end zone for his second touchdown. The Packers will get the ball back with 1:07 and three timeouts left.

49ers 24, Packers 21.

8:16 Love throws another pick and the 49ers will win. Stay tuned for their grades.
