49ers @ Jaguars Live Blog

Must-win game.
In this story:

This is the live blog for the 49ers' Week 10 road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

8:45 Here are the 49ers' inactives: Aaron Banks, Ty Davis-Price, Jalen Graham, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Kalia Davis, Brayden Willis, Brandon Allen.

This means both Trent Williams (ankle) and Javon Hargrave (knee) will play today despite being listed as questionable. That's great news, considering the 49ers might not be able to beat the Jaguars without those two. But it will be interesting to see how effective Williams and Hargrave are. Williams hasn't played since Week 6 and it's unclear how healthy he truly is. It seems likely he wouldn't play in this game if it weren't so important to the 49ers, considering they've lost three in a row. Williams reportedly insisted on starting in this game, which is admirable, but has he recovered enough to be effective? Is an injured Williams better than backup left tackle Jaylon Moore, who's healthy? And will playing on an injured ankle make the injury linger?

As far as Hargrave goes, he injured his knee during practice on Thursday when the media wasn't present. So no one really knows how serious his knee injury is or what type of knee injury it is. The fact that he's playing in a game just three days after getting hurt suggests the injury isn't serious. The 49ers need a big game from him and Williams today. They're two of the highest paid players on the team and they're supposed to be leaders.

10:03 The Jaguars will receive the opening kickoff.

FIRST QUARTER

10:05 On 3rd and 5 from the Jaguars 30, Arik Armstead sacks Trevor Lawrence, and the Jaguars go 3 and out. Their offense wasn't impressive at all. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 43.

10:09 On 1st and 10 from the Jaguars 13, Brock Purdy rolls left, stops, throws back to his right and hits Brandon Aiyuk in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown. Dangerous throw that easily could have gotten intercepted. The past few weeks, it probably would have gotten intercepted. This time, Purdy was fortunate and made a beautiful play. Also, what an incredible opening script from Kyle Shanahan. That was a four-play drive.

49ers 7, Jaguars 0.

10:16 On 3rd and 10 from the Jaguars 25, Javon Hargrave sacks Lawrence, and the Jaguars go 3 and out again. They look completely unprepared, and the 49ers look utterly dominant in every way. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 38.

10:25 On 3rd and 4 from the Jaguars 13, Purdy takes a sack while Deebo Samuel is wide open in the end zone. Then Jake Moody makes a 39-yard field goal. The 49ers had a chance to blow this game open, but didn't. Let's see if the defense continues to dominate.

49ers 10, Jaguars 0.

10:34 On 3rd and 7 from the Jaguars 44, Lawrence steps up in the pocket and throws an incomplete pass over the middle. Charvarius Ward was in man-to-man coverage. So far the 49ers have given up one first down. Arik Armstead left the game briefly with a knee injury but returned. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 20. It feels like they can put away the Jaguars right here in the first quarter. What a statement that would be. So far, all the 49ers' high-priced players have shown up this week. You get the feeling they realize how big this game is.

10:41 First play of the drive, Brandon Aiyuk catches a 17-yard pass over the middle but is flagged 10 yards for pushing off. That was a wasted series.

SECOND QUARTER

10:44 After the punt, the Jaguars take over at their 43.

10:48 On 2nd and 15 from the 49ers 46, Chase Young and Nick Bosa sack Lawrence at the same time, Bosa strips the ball from Lawrence and recovers it. Incredible performance by the defense so far. I'm sure it's because they moved Steve Wilks down from the coach's booth to the sideline. That's sarcasm. The 49ers take over at the Jaguars 49.

10:54 On 3rd and 6 from the Jaguars 47, Purdy scrambles out of the pocket and hits Deebo Samuel for 8 yards, but Trent Williams is flagged for holding and the 49ers punt a few plays later. After the punt, the Jaguars take over at their 1. Good luck with that. The only long pass the Jaguars have thrown was attempted by a wide receiver.

11:07 On 3rd and 4 from the 49ers 19, Charvarius Ward plays man to man coverage in the slot against Christian Kirk and breaks up a pass intended for him in the end zone. Phenomenal play and good bounce back after committing an illegal contact penalty earlier in the drive. Next play, the Jaguars make a 37-yard field goal. That's a victory for them considering they started the drive at their 1.

49ers 10, Jaguars 3.

11:26 On 2nd and 8 from the Jaguars 11, Purdy commits intentional grounding. Two plays later, Jake Moody makes a 35-yard field goal -- barely -- and the first half ends. He snuck the ball around the right upright. The 49ers will get the ball to start the second half.

49ers 13, Jaguars 3.

THIRD QUARTER

11:44 On 2nd and 1 from the 49ers 34, Purdy heaves the ball downfield as he takes a hit and connects with George Kittle for a 66-yard touchdown. The defender covering Kittle fell down after the catch. Phenomenal throw by Purdy. What a statement game for the 49ers.

49ers 20, Jaguars 3.

11:53 On 3rd and 1 from the 49ers 34, the Jaguars call a pass, Nick Bosa hits Lawrence who flips the ball to Tank Bigsby, the ball flies through his hands and Talanoa Hufanga intercepts it. The Jaguars could have just attempted a quarterback sneak.

11:57 On 3rd and 3 from midfield, Purdy takes a sack and the 49ers go 3 and out. That was a forgettable series. Fortunately for the 49ers, their defense has been nearly flawless today.

12:11 On 2nd and goal from the 9, Ambry Thomas gives up a short catch to Christian Kirk, stands up him, strips the ball from him, recovers it and returns it for a touchdown, but the touchdown doesn't count due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty because members of the team who were on the sideline ran onto the field. One of the best plays you'll ever see and one of the worst at the same time. What an incredible performance by the entire defense. The 49ers take over at their 19.

12:19 On 1st and 10 from the Jaguars 23, Deebo Samuel runs an end around to the and scores a touchdown. This is a blow out.

49ers 27, Jaguars 3.

FOURTH QUARTER

12:30 On 4th and 15 from the Jaguars 44, Javon Hargrave hits Lawrence as he throws a duck downfield that Fred Warner intercepts. That's the fourth takeaway by the 49ers defense in this game.

12:33 On 2nd and 7 from the Jaguars 22, Purdy play fakes, rolls to his left, points at Kyle Juszczyk downfield and connects with him for a 22-yard touchdown pass. That was an incredible play. Everything is working for the 49ers. This is their most impressive performance of the season, and it reestablishes them as Super Bowl contenders.

49ers 34, Jaguars 7.

12:39 On 3rd and 15 from the Jaguars 20, Lawrence throws a screen pass to tight end Evan Engram who gets tackled for a five-yard loss by Dre Greenlaw, and the Jaguars go 3 and out. After the punt, the 49ers take over at their 31.

12:48 Sam Darnold replaces Purdy. On 4th and goal from the 4, Darnold throws an incomplete pass intended for McCaffrey, and his touchdown streak will end at 17 games.
