49ers, Nick Bosa Need "Significant Breakthrough" to Finalize a Deal
Five days.
The 49ers are five days away from their regular season opener against the Steelers. As the game draws closer, it is becoming more of a reality that the 49ers will have to go into Pittsburgh without star pass rusher Nick Bosa.
The two sides appear to be in a stalemate with the contract extension negotiations. It's reached such an impasse that the only way for a deal to be finalized is if the two sides get a "significant breakthrough" soon. That is what Ian Rapoport of NFL Network believes as he gives his two cents on the matter.
"This really isn't a question of, is he gonna be the NFL's highest-paid pass-rusher. It sounds to me like they're already there, already past T.J. Watt," Rapoport said. "That's not really what this is about. This is about how close to Aaron Donald's $31 million and change does he get, or does he get over that?"
So, it sounds like the 49ers have made a lucrative offer to Bosa. However, why would Bosa accept anything less than a deal that will surpass Aaron Donald? He deserves to be the highest paid non-quarterback in the league, which includes Donald's deal. It seems the 49ers are trying to play hard ball with Bosa. Perhaps they are hoping he accepts their offer since it is a high sum, while they get him on a bit of a discount since it is less than Donald's.
The 49ers have to be delusional to believe Bosa will or should accept it. He has all the leverage in the world. The 49ers need Bosa more than Bosa needs the 49ers, especially with Week 1 being five days away. Are the 49ers really going to decrease the likelihood of winning games because they don't want to cash out Bosa? As of now, it looks like they are okay with that and that they believe they can win without him. This is just another total misevaluation on the 49ers part.
For their sake, they better hope they do not lose to the Steelers if Bosa is inactive, or this team will be ripped to shreds with criticism.
