An Encouraging Update on 49ers QB Brock Purdy's Recovery

The quarterback competition between Trey Lance and Sam Darnold may end up being a moot point.

It sounds like Brock Purdy will be returning to the practice field for the 49ers sooner than later. An encouraging update has been revealed on Purdy's recovery by Albert Breer of The MMQB in his latest column.

"He’s on a very controlled throwing program now, and this week’s minicamp in Santa Clara should provide more answers," Breer wrote. "As it stands? Purdy is throwing without pain, and he’s passed every test the Niners have thrown at him. The plan going forward is to gradually increase the velocity and distance on his throws. But at this point, I’m told he’s come through the rehab process and is now building strength back in his arm, on a track that’d have him ready to go for Week 1."

Good news for Purdy and the 49ers. You just hope that Purdy isn't rushing himself back. There is cause to believe he is as the more he lets Lance and Darnold showcase their abilities with him away, the more likely he becomes a distant memory. Like the saying goes, "out of sight, out of mind." Purdy may feel like he has to get back so that he doesn't look any starts this year.

Should Purdy end up making it for some training camp, then he will assuredly be the Week 1 starter for the 49ers. All of the argument and debate between Lance and Darnold being the starter will have been for nothing. It will end up turning into a backup quarterback debate, which doesn't have the same luster. The competition will have ended before it really even got any traction, and it might be for the best as the banter became too outlandish.

The 49ers will get their wish if Purdy continues to trend in the right direction.
