Analyzing Day 14 of the 2023 49ers QB Competition

A great day for the starting quarterback minus his eighth interception in 11 practices.
In this story:

SANTA CLARA -- Here's what Brock Purdy, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold did on Day 14 of 49ers training camp.

BROCK PURDY

Completed 11 of 14 pass attempts, which is very good. But also got sacked four times and threw a pick-six, which is par for the course. The sacks weren't all necessarily his fault, but the pick-six definitely was. Because on that play, he held the ball for four seconds in a clean pocket, casually turned to his left to throw a five-yard pass to tight end Troy Fumagalli running a quick out route and telegraphed a dead duck to Talanoa Hufanga, who snagged the pass and jogged it into Purdy's end zone for the score. Purdy does something like this every day -- he clearly isn't the quarterback he was before his elbow surgery, because he seems to lack the confidence and zip he used to have. Still, he made a nice 30-yard touch throw to Jauan Jennings running up the right sideline. That was Purdy's best play. But despite that throw, the 49ers have to be concerned about the fact that through 11 camp practices (Purdy took three days off), he has thrown eight interceptions and four pick-6s. If he plays like this during the regular season, he won't last.

TREY LANCE

Completed 4 of 5 pass attempts and got sacked three times. His longest completion was a 20-yarder to Cameron Latu running a corner route. His best throw was a sidearm screen pass to Danny Gray -- Lance hasn't always thrown well when he changes arm slots. And his best read was a quick throw to Ronnie Bell for 10 yards in the face of an unblocked blitzer. On this play, Lance didn't hesitate, which has been an issue for him since the 49ers drafted him. And it still is an issue for him at times, particularly when he checks down. His worst throw was his one incomplete pass -- a deep overthrow intended for Bell.

SAM DARNOLD

Completed 3 of 4 pass attempts, got sacked twice and nobody cares. Darnold could complete all his passes and never get sacked and people would just yawn, assuming he's the worst quarterback on the team. But it's unclear who the worst quarterback on the team really is. Some days it's Darnold. Other days it's Lance. Other days such as today, it's Purdy. I'm guessing all three will start games at some point this season, which means eventually we'll find out which quarterback truly is the best. Right now, the 49ers don't even know, although they like to think they do.
