Analyzing Day 7 of the 2023 49ers QB Competition

The 49ers still have no franchise quarterback.
In this story:

SANTA CLARA -- Here's what Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen did on Day 7 of 49ers training camp.

BROCK PURDY

Completed 7 of 10 pass attempts. None of his throws were almost intercepted. Five of his completions traveled fewer than 10 yards. The other two completions traveled 15 yards over the middle. His incomplete passes were a 20-yard attempt over the middle and two deep shots to Deebo Samuel near the right sideline. First, Samuel ran a deep crossing route from left to right and Purdy overthrew him. Later, Samuel ran a go route on the right sideline against backup cornerback Samuel Womack, who was playing press man-to-man coverage on 3rd and 4. Samuel blew by him and was open for the touchdown, but Purdy's deep pass was low and got broken up by Samuel Womack, who's only 5'9". A better throw would have resulted in a touchdown, but Purdy can't hit that long throw up the sideline consistently because he lacks arm strength. That's a major limitation of his game. Franchise quarterbacks generally don't have that limitation. Purdy is a dink-and-dunk artist whose sole first down during the move-the-ball period was a two-yard check down to Jordan Mason on 3rd and long.

SAM DARNOLD

Completed 6 of 8 pass attempts and picked up two first downs during the move-the-ball period. All but one of Darnold's completions traveled fewer than 10 yards. He made no attempt to push the ball down the field. He simply dinked and dunked, which might be what the coaches want from the quarterbacks.

TREY LANCE

Completed 5 of 8 pass attempts and threw an interception directly to linebacker Dee Winters instead of checking the ball down. Also threw the ball away once. Lance was the only quarterback today who completed a long pass near the sideline -- he hit Tay Martin running a deep route on the right side. Lance throws that particular pass with such confidence this offseason. But he also threw a short pass behind Brayden Willis, tossed an ugly interception while the other two quarterbacks protected the football and picked up zero first downs during the move-the-ball period. And this comes a day after Adam Schefter praised Lance and said he's trending in the right direction. Maybe Lance needs less praise and more criticism.

BRANDON ALLEN

Didn't take a rep during 11 on 11s. Hallelujah.
