CB Ambry Thomas has a Chance to Earn Favor With 49ers DC Steve Wilks

Ambry Thomas went from being a starter for the 49ers in 2021, to not even being able to find the field in 2022.

The 2022 season was a fall from grace season for cornerback Ambry Thomas.

He went from being a starter for the 49ers in 2021 enroute to an NFC Championship appearance his rookie year, to not even being able to find the field at any point on defense in 2022. It was quite the role reversal between him and Deommodore Lenoir. Except Thomas couldn't hold onto his role as the starter, while Lenoir looks in better shape to do so. Thomas has the potential to be a roster cut candidate for the 49ers.

However, Thomas might be able to stay on. Following the conclusion of minicamp that put an end to all of the offseason activities, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was a bit bullish on Thomas with his performance in practice. When he was asked about Thomas being capable of bringing the ideal physicality that he wants in a corner, Wilks didn't waver in his belief.

“I think he does. I think only time would tell. I think right now, I'm very impressed with being in gym shorts right now, but I think once we get the pads on in training camp. We have an opportunity to go practice against the Raiders before we play them and we'll see exactly once we get to the preseason, but I'm very confident that he can get it done."

It's not a complete and endearing vote of confidence in Thomas as Wilks still wants to see Thomas really shine when it matters most. But it's something for Thomas to build off of, especially when it he is trending towards being on the bubble. There is a chance here for Thomas to earn favor with Wilks, and if he does that, then he will surely remain with the 49ers. If Wilks sees he's worth of being retained, then Kyle Shanahan is sure to keep Thomas on.

Much like with offensive line coach Chris Foerster on right tackle Colton McKivitz, the first steps towards being cemented in a role is looking good in the joint practices against the Raiders. Of course, they can't play poorly in the early goings of training camp amongst each other either, but if they can maintain a steady performance going into the joint practices, then it will only earn them favor. Thomas has to show he isn't soft, which has been the case in his first two seasons.

It's now or never for Thomas to prevent his career from going into a freefall.
