Former 49ers Pass Rusher Chase Young Signs With the Saints
A brief stay.
Former San Francisco 49ers pass rusher Chase Young is signing with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year deal for $13 million, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The deal is fully guaranteed for Young, which makes sense why returning to the 49ers wasn't a reality. San Francisco was never going to come close to giving Young a deal like that. It's really an overpay by the Saints for a pass rusher who isn't that great.
Young had every chance in the world to be a staple on the 49ers defense, yet he never made his mark. If he did, then perhaps the 49ers do bring him back. He only managed to tally 3.5 sacks in his 11 appearances for the 49ers including the playoffs. The 49ers had hoped for more when they acquired him for a third-round pick from the Washington Commanders.
Young will be most remembered for his lackluster effort in the NFC championship game on an allowed touchdown run against the Detroit Lions. The good news is that the 49ers will be receiving a compensatory pick since Young is leaving. So, he essentially was on the team for nothing but the salary that was paid to him in the games.
Can't fault the 49ers for kicking the tires on Young. It was a great move in theory since he didn't need to be the best pass rusher on the team. It just didn't work out. It happens, but usually it pans out for the 49ers when they make a midseason trade for a defensive lineman.
