How Kyle Shanahan Has Improved as the 49ers Head Coach

On Thursday, Fred Warner explained exactly how Shanahan has improved.

SANTA CLARA -- Kyle Shanahan is having his best season as a head coach.

On Thursday, Fred Warner explained exactly how Shanahan has improved.

WARNER: "He's the same guy, just better. Every year he has gotten better as a coach. Just having the experiences we've had as a team and losing in the big games, having slow starts to seasons, he always looks and reflects back on those prior years and those scars that you earn, like how do we get better from that? What did we learn from that in order to be better going forward? Every year, going into every season there's always something new that we have to work on to get better at to attain what we're trying to do here. That's something that he has done a great job of every year, just continuing to get better as a coach and a leader for us."

Q: How do the scars help you at this time of year?

WARNER: "You always remember those moments. It's important during those times like last year in Philly, you see the confetti coming down, you see them with their hats and t-shirts on the stage, they're happy, and you're standing there watching it all happen. I can put myself right back there in this moment. And you can't just blink and you're right back into having an opportunity to do it again. You start from Ground 1. You have to build the team back up again, and you blink and we're here. It's the start of the playoffs with an opportunity to do something special. I think that's what the scars are for. You remember those moments. How can I not give my all to this?"
