How the 49ers can Help Trey Lance if he Becomes the Starter

Should Trey Lance end up earning his spot to become the Week 1 starter and beyond, then there is one specific way that the 49ers can help him.

Trey Lance is currently a backup for the 49ers.

His starting spot that he had this time last year is long gone with the 49ers electing to go with Brock Purdy. However, all is not lost for Lance. He has a golden opportunity to take advantage of Purdy on the mend from UCL surgery. All he has to do is beat out Sam Darnold and make it to Week 1 of the regular season.

From there it will be on him to ensure he cements himself as the starter. But he could definitely use some support from the 49ers if he gets there. Should Lance end up earning his spot to become the Week 1 starter and beyond, then there is one specific way that the 49ers can help him.

Stop leaking out that they prefer a different quarterback. That was the case all year last year before Lance suffered his season-ending ankle injury. Jimmy Garoppolo was viewed as the quarterback that should start by some unnamed players over Lance. The reason is that they viewed Garoppolo as a more "win now" quarterback than Lance who needed to develop. Whoever those unnamed players were leaking that out is a terrible teammate.

It was immensely immature and unprofessional. How could they do that to someone who is supposed to be their "brother" and quarterback of the team? It behooves these guys to uplift Lance and give him their unconditional support. Giving out opinions of disbelief on Lance to reporters is not helpful. It just adds to the drama and paints the 49ers like a high school full of gossip. Even if there is doubt still with Lance, it does not need to be known. Keep that thought to yourself and do what you can to bring Lance up to speed.

If he can thrive, then that means everyone else on the 49ers will. Nothing beneficial comes out from creating noise, and I say this because it is sure to occur with the preference from some players wanting Purdy over Lance just like it was with Garoppolo last year. Cut it out and grow up. Support him to the best of your ability as that will only enhance winning games, which is all the players and coaches care about.

The same goes for Darnold, Purdy, and any other future quarterback that could emerge with the 49ers. Do not sabotage a teammate by bringing unnecessary noise with your own voice, especially anonymously. Anything and everything should be to help the starting quarterback no matter who it is. This is the first and major step the 49ers need to take in order to fully help and support Lance if he ends up earning the role as the starter.
