Here are the players placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List:

1. CB Darrell Luter Jr.

And here is the 53-man roster.

QUARTERBACK

  1. Brock Purdy
  2. Sam Darnold
  3. Brandon Allen

Analysis: I think it's funny that the 49ers kept Brandon Allen when they really wanted to keep Trey Lance, but he decided he'd rather be a third-string quarterback literally anywhere other than here, so they were forced to trade him and keep Allen, who probably would have made it to the practice squad. Nice. In retrospect, they should have drafted a quarterback this year. They could have had Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who currently is the second-string quarterback in Cleveland.

RUNNING BACK

  1. Christian McCaffrey
  2. Elijah Mitchell
  3. Jordan Mason
  4. Ty Davis-Price
  5. Kyle Juszczyk

Analysis: Most teams keep only three tailbacks, but the 49ers will need four because they can't keep any healthy for a full season.

WIDE RECEIVER

  1. Brandon Aiyuk
  2. Deebo Samuel
  3. Jauan Jennings
  4. Ray-Ray McCloud
  5. Danny Gray
  6. Ronnie Bell

Analysis: McCloud and Gray are injured and could end up on short-term I.R. In which case, the 49ers could sign a wide receiver such as Willie Snead for Week 1.

TIGHT END

  1. George Kittle
  2. Brayden Willis
  3. Ross Dwelley
  4. Charlie Woerner

Analysis: The 49ers drafted Cameron Latu in Round 3 this year, but he had a horrific offseason and then injured his meniscus, so he'll red shirt this season and try again next year.

OFFENSIVE LINE

  1. Trent Williams
  2. Aaron Banks
  3. Jake Brendel
  4. Spencer Burford
  5. Colton McKivitz
  6. Jon Feliciano
  7. Jaylon Moore
  8. Matt Pryor
  9. Nick Zakelj

Analysis: The bottom four players aren't NFL players. The 49ers could cut or waive them today and they wouldn't end up on other NFL rosters. They are purely pet projects.

DEFENSIVE LINE

  1. Javon Hargrave
  2. Arik Armstead
  3. Clelin Ferrell
  4. Drake Jackson
  5. Kevin Givens
  6. Javon Kinlaw
  7. Kalia Davis
  8. Robert Beal Jr.

Analysis: Nick Bosa doesn't count to the 53-man roster because he still hasn't reported to the team, so the 49ers will have to make a spot for him eventually, assuming he doesn't request a trade.

LINEBACKER

  1. Fred Warner
  2. Dre Greenlaw
  3. Jalen Graham
  4. Dee Winters
  5. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
  6. Oren Burks

Analysis: The 49ers waived Marcelino McCrary-Ball, who is good enough to start for some teams. A smart organization will claim him. It's too bad the 49ers kept four subpar backup offensive lineman and not him.

CORNERBACK

  1. Charvarius Ward
  2. Deommodore Lenoir
  3. Ambry Thomas
  4. Samuel Womack
  5. Isaiah Oliver

Analysis: Oliver had a horrendous offseason and didn't deserve to make the team, but the 49ers gave him a two-year contract with guaranteed money, so he makes it at the expense of D'Shawn Jamison and Qwuantrezz Knight, two undrafted free agents who outplayed Oliver. Smart organizations will claim Jamison and Knight. If the 49ers are lucky, they'll wind up on the practice squad.

SAFETY

  1. Talanoa Hufanga
  2. Tashaun Gipson
  3. George Odum
  4. Ji'Ayir Brown

Analysis: Hufanga has a Baker Cyst on his knee and could miss time. Will he go to short-team I.R.? Stay tuned.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  1. Jake Moody
  2. Mitch Wishnowsky
  3. Taybor Pepper

Analysis: Moody has a quad strain and could land on short-term I.R. In that case, the 49ers could sign a veteran kicker such as Mason Crosby or Robbie Gould.
