Report: Jimmy Garoppolo is Expected to Sign with the Raiders

The Jimmy Garoppolo era with the San Francisco 49ers is officially over.

Looks like Kyle Shanahan wasn't bluffing in his exit press conference after all.

Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders when free agency kicks off on Mar. 15, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. It is a three-year deal worth $67.5 million with $34 million guaranteed. The Raiders get their new starting quarterback after cutting ties with Derek Carr who signed with the Saints.

The Garoppolo era with the San Francisco 49ers is officially over. There will not be a surprise re-signing with him like last year. It is done and over with now. Both sides are turning the page to begin a new chapter for themselves. What a long and hectic journey it has been with Garoppolo and the 49ers since he was acquired back in October of 2017.

Garoppolo sold the 49ers on a dream when he started and won the last five games of the 2017 season. It led the 49ers to hand out a lucrative extension worth $137.5 million for five years. And while the 49ers had a ton of success whenever Garoppolo was active, he was never the main factor for why the 49ers were going far. Yes, he did play exceptionally well this past season, but it was clear once Brock Purdy took over that he was a massive upgrade.

There are very few games to look back on that can be pointed out that Garoppolo was the direct cause of a win, but there were certainly plenty where he was the direct cause of a loss. The 49ers are in a better place now at quarterback despite having Trey Lance and Purdy on the mend. Still, either of them make for better options going forward than Garoppolo.

Now, the Raiders will get the chance to be sold on a dream from Garoppolo. They're likely hoping they can get the version that wasn't turning the ball over and with more high than low moments they saw this past season. For their sake, they better hope he can actually finish a season, which is always the main issue with him.
