Not great.

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers' best player didn't show up to training camp.

Nick Bosa has decided to hold out until he signs a contract extension with the 49ers, which hasn't happened yet. On Tuesday, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan provided an update on the status of Bosa's impending extension.

JOHN LYNCH: "Everybody is reporting today -- 12:30 is our first event as a team, and that will be our conditioning test. I've seen various players. I have not seen Nick. I would expect he's not here to start off. We're working. We're having really good communication with Brian Ayrault. He's got competent people we have an immense amount of respect for working for him, and we're working diligently to try to come to an agreement. I think the challenges -- we're talking about a real special player. We're talking about one of the better players in the league. You could argue that could simplify things. But I think at times it's just finding that sweet spot. We're committed to working toward that. Just spoke with Brian this morning. We're also committed to keeping things private. There's some sanctity to those things. As a player, you don't want everything being aired out. We've agreed with Brian and Nick to keep our dealings private. When there are updates, we'll give them to you."

Q: Would you expect him to practice with his teammates this offseason without a new contract?

KYLE SHANAHAN: "I wouldn't. That would surprise me."

Q: That's a mutual decision, coach and player?

JOHN LYNCH: "We want all our players to be here. We have a pretty good track record of having our guys here and done with contracts. This one may be perhaps a little more complex. No time lines there, but we're working hard and have good communication. And we have to keep doing that. The interest is mutual."
