Steve Wilks Says He's Still Learning the 49ers Defensive Scheme

On Thursday, I asked about his progress learning the 49ers scheme. Here's what he said.
In this story:

SANTA CLARA -- No matter what Steve Wilks does, the 49ers can't get to the quarterback like they're accustomed to.

Whether he rushes four defensive linemen or sends a blitz, the 49ers defense is generating pressure at a subpar rate. And with all the talent on that side of the ball, the responsibility falls on the defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks, who is running the wide-9 defense for the first time this season.

On Thursday, I asked about his progress learning the 49ers scheme. Here's what he said.

ME: You mentioned you want to look at your pressures, your play designs, your play calls. Do you ever go back and look at what was successful for DeMeco Ryans and Robert Saleh with similar players.

WILKS: "I think you have to, because it's based off the defense. This defense is a unique defense. There are certain things that go with that particular defense. I'm learning that. There are certain things you can't stray away from. As I evaluate and talk to the coaches as well as Kyle Shanahan, I see those things. Again, that's why I'm not panicking. I know we have the personnel, I know we have the talent, and I just have to do a better job putting them in position."

ME: What's it like learning a defense and coaching a defense at the same time?

WILKS: "It's always challenging. When you've done your own thing for 17 years, it's a little different, but I'm encouraged. I've got a great supporting cast. These coaches around me are phenomenal. They know this defense. They know their craft. These players are great. We're all in this together. I'm not hitting the panic button at all."
