Where Will the 49ers Select a Quarterback in the NFL Draft?
The 49ers have been conducting a lot of visits and workouts with prospective quarterbacks that'll be in the upcoming NFL draft.
Tuesday it was a private workout with UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson, then it followed the next day where the 49ers hosted a pro day at Levi's Stadium. Several quarterbacks were in attendance for that, highlighted by Fresno State's Jake Haener, Stanford's Tanner McKee, and Houston's Ike Ogbogu.
The likelihood of the 49ers drafting quarterback looks more likely than not. It wasn't something that seemed too obvious beforehand since the 49ers are dead set with the quarterbacks they have on the roster now. But now it is looking stronger and stronger that one will be drafted.
The only question with that is where will the 49ers select a quarterback in the NFL draft?
The fifth round is where I think they look to target one. It is where all the quarterbacks the 49ers have been connected with are likely to fall to, if not one round earlier or later. Ultimately a selection for a quarterback will be made on Day 3 of the draft. I think the 49ers finally try to get some of that fifth-round magic that they have and place it on a quarterback by taking one there. Of course, they aren't just going to draft a player there and assume it will be a hit.
But everything seems to align with the amount of picks the 49ers have in the mid to late rounds and with the prospects who are slated to be in that range. It has the makings of their magic in the fifth round again, so it will make for quite the story if that ends up playing out. Whoever the 49ers end up drafting will be facing a nearly impossible chance of making the final roster cuts. The 49ers are locked into their current three quarterbacks in Brock Purdy, Trey Lance, and Sam Darnold.
A rookie only has a chance at making the final roster if Purdy is out for longer than initially thought. Practice squad will be the likely end result of whoever is drafted. It seems almost pointless, but the 49ers do need to field a third quarterback with Purdy out. It can't just be Lance and Darnold taking 100 percent of the reps between them. Plus, a rookie can fill for either of them in case of an injury.
Keep a close eye on day three for a quarterback selection from the 49ers. Not unless they make a shocking one on day two in the second or third rounds.
