Why you Shouldn't Feel Confident in the 49ers for the 2024 Season

The heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl after such an amazing season can have repercussions on the 49ers going into 2024.
In this story:

The Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs is surely still hurting the San Francisco 49ers. So many chances were there for the 49ers to win that game and they were unable to capitalize.

2023 was also the perfect year for them because everything went right. It was easily their strongest team under Kyle Shanahan and they were facing the weakest version of the Chiefs with Patrick Mahomes. And yet, none of that mattered as the 49ers finished as runner ups once again. Bouncing back from this will be difficult for them.

If your confidence has dwindled in the 49ers after that, then I do not blame you. There are reasons why you shouldn't feel confident in the 49ers for the 2024 season. When I mentioned that 2023 was perfect for them, it is because of multiple factors. For starters, their health. The health on the 49ers this season was the best they have ever had.

Usually they end up with a handful of players missing for the year or out for multiple games. That wasn't the case this season. Talanoa Hufanga and Arik Armstead were the real losses on the 49ers this past year, but they weren't that significant. Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams were the most significant as the 49ers lost all three games that they were absent for. But what are the odds that these two fairly injury prone players only miss three games or less in 2024?

What about George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, or even Brock Purdy? Two of them have had injury prone titles to their name, while Purdy is the first quarterback to start every game in a season for the 49ers since 2019. You just have to wonder if the 49ers will get that amazing fortune with their health again in 2024. It usually hasn't been that way for them, which is one of the reasons 2023 was perfect for them.

Another factor is that the NFC was mediocre. There were no teams that could truly oppose the 49ers in 2023. Now, the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions almost knocked them off, but the 49ers weren't all there for those matchups. Still, those are two teams that will be threats next season and should be improved. Not to mention that the Los Angeles Rams should be a force.

And what about the Philadelphia Eagles? I think they will be strong again after their upgrades at offensive and defensive coordinators, and the Dallas Cowboys are always in the mix. Then, there is probably going to be a sleeper team that no one is expecting like how the Packers were this season. The NFC is getting stronger next season -- not weaker. That won't make it easier for the 49ers.

Lastly, the 49ers have suffered heartbreaking loss after heartbreaking loss in three consecutive years. Four out of the last five years if you expand it a bit. They keep getting knocked down and getting back, yet have not been able to win it all. How many more chances with strong playoff/Super Bowl runs do the 49ers have? And can they continue to be themselves in the regular season?

At this point, the regular season feels meaningless. I wouldn't be shocked if they finished with a 10 win record in 2024. I don't know how these players can continually lock in after so many times of giving it their all and falling short. These heartbreaks could have repercussions on them. And with so many chances already missed, you have to wonder if the 49ers have failed for the last time after Super Bowl LVIII.
