Will the 49ers Extend Brock Purdy’s Contract Next Year?
Technically, Brock Purdy will be eligible for a contract extension after next season, but the 49ers don't have to give him one.
Purdy's contract runs through 2025. So if the 49ers want to play hard ball, they could make him play out his rookie deal and then figure out what to do with him in two years. Then they could extend his contract, let him go or franchise tag him. Remember, Washington franchise tagged Kirk Cousins a couple times a few years ago. But they poisoned their relationship with him. Eventually, he left as quickly as he could and never looked back.
The 49ers would run the risk of poisoning their relationship with Purdy if they don't extend him next offseason, because he already has done so much for them for so little -- he's making NFL minimum wage. And he will again next season. And assuming he stay healthy and continues to play well, his extension would be extremely expensive for the 49ers.
If the 49ers refuse to pay Purdy what he's worth next year, he could sit out all of 2025. Or he could do what Cousins did -- fulfill his contractual obligation to the team and bolt as soon as he legally can.
I'm guessing the 49ers don't want to drive away the best quarterback they've had since Jeff Garcia. I'm guessing they'll extend his contract as soon as they can next offseason and he'll earn more than $50 million per season on average.
Is Purdy worth that much money?
We'll find out.
