The 49ers Sign Brock Wright to a 3-Year, $12 Million Offer Sheet

The 49ers clearly expect the Lions not to match the offer. Detroit originally tendered Wright a one-year deal worth less than $3 million, so the 49ers seem to value him more than the Lions do.

Finally, the 49ers have made an attempt to improve their offense.

On Friday, they signed Detroit Lions restricted free agent tight end Brock Wright to a three-year, $12 million offer sheet, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Which means the Lions have five days to match the offer. And if they don't, Wright will be the first addition the 49ers have made to their offense
this offseason.

The 49ers clearly expect the Lions not to match the offer. Detroit originally tendered Wright a one-year deal worth less than $3 million, so the 49ers seem to value him more than the Lions do.

The 49ers need to replace backup tight end Charlie Woerner, who signed earlier this offseason with the Atlanta Falcons for three years and $12 million -- virtually the same deal the 49ers have offered Wright. Which makes you wonder why the 49ers didn't simply re-sign Woerner.

It seems the 49ers think Wright is an upgrade over Woener. Both players are good blockers, but Woerner has just 11 catches and zero touchdowns in four seasons, while Wright has 43 catches and 7 touchdowns in three seasons. So Wright is a bigger threat, although the 49ers probably won't throw him many passes if he joins the team. He would be seventh on the pecking order after Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings and Kyle Juszczyk.

Still, it's good to have a blocking tight end who's an actual weapon in the red zone as a receiver, and not just a small offensive tackle.
