Bears Add Fourth-Year Guard from Detroit
The Bears have added a player with a possible axe to grind against the NFC North favorite Detroit Lions.
They have claimed Logan Stenberg off waivers, the 6-foot-6, 315-pound fourth-year veteran guard from Kentucky. To make room on their roster, they waived undrafted free agent wide receiver Aron Cruickshank.
Stenberg could fill a need for guard depth because both starting right guard Nate Davis and backup guard/center Lucas Patrick have been out missing practices with injuries deemed minor. However, the Bears haven't reported what those injuries are.
Also, starting left guard Teven Jenkins missed a few practices with an injury before returning. They have tried backup lineman Alex Leatherwood at left guard, as well, and second-year guard Ja'Tyre Carter has had plenty of practice time with starters the last week.
Stenberg had injury issues with the Lions after coming aboard from Kentucky as a fourth-round pick, 121st overall in 2020. However, when he did get the chance to play last year he started four games and recorded some of the league's worst blocking grades according to Pro Football Focus.
The Lions had been trying to train him as a center and at both guard positions but it never seemed to work. He played after Halapoulivaati Vaitai suffered a back injury last year and the four starts were the first of his career.
He had three penalties, two sacks allowed and recorded a PFF pass blocking grade of 15.0 for 130 snaps as a pass blocker. His run blocking was so-so at 57.2. His overall grade of 39.8 would have put him in the bottom three among all guards, had he been on the field enough snaps to qualify for consideration. He played 228 total snaps according to PFF, allowed 12 pressures and five QB hits besides the two sacks.
Stenberg didn't play as a rookie and got on the field for only four plays in 2021.
