Bears New Coordinator Working on Staff
After waiting a day and a half, the Bears made the hiring of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron official with an announcement but no press conference.
"We are excited to add Shane to our coaching staff," coach Matt Eberflus said. "I also want to thank all the candidates we spoke to throughout the interview process. This was a very exhaustive search, but in the end I'm grateful the journey led us to Shane.
"He is a great teacher and communicator with a diverse coaching background among some of the game's most elite head coaches. I look forward to partnering with him as we build out the rest of the staff and get him started here."
According to a report by CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Waldron immediately set up interviews with former Seahawks offensive coaches as he helps the Bears try to fill their other vacant assistant coaching positions.
The names mentioned by Jones were running backs coach and running game cooridnator Chad Morton, wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Sanjay Lal and assistant quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph. Lal has been coaching 17 years and Morton 15, Joseph four. Lal was working with the wide receiver trio of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith Njigba last season and was was Dallas as an assistant when Matt Eberflus was in his final year there as linebackers coach.
"I appreciate this opportunity given to me by Coach Eberflus and Ryan Poles," Waldron said in a statment released by the team. "We can't wait to get to work at a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fan base."
The Bears pointed out Waldron's Seahawks ranked third over his three years in big plays (25 yards or longer) and fourth in big rushing plays (10 yards or longer). It was Eberflus' desires to have his offense creating more big gains.
The Seahawks also tied for fewest turnovers committed (53) in that period. This fits the Eberflus HITS principle stressing takeaways on defense and taking care of the ball on offense.
