Report Says No Surgery for Justin Fields
Justin Fields isn't officially out for Sunday but thumb surgery is unofficially out.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said there will be no surgery on Fields' thumb.
This could mean a return in upcoming games for Fields, who has had trouble gripping the ball since the injury and hasn't practiced all week since his injury against the Vikings, although he's not playing this week.
The Bears should be facing a Raiders backup quarterback, as well. Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the game, according to Rapoport. Garoppolo hasn't practiced all week. The starter is yet to be determined between Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell.
For now, though, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is working with Tyson Bagent to start Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Soldier Field.
"I think he's a fluid athlete," Getsy said. "I think the processing part of it, he's played a lot of ball in college, threw the ball all over the yard, so he's an obvious passer of the football.
"All that stuff is good, but like we've talked about so far, the cool part about him is the work ethic and the kind of teammate that he is that he brings to that huddle to be able to go command the huddle right away in his first opportunity to do so. He did a really nice job."
Getsy saw this at the Senior Bowl, as well. Bagent was on the American team coached by Getsy and it was then where Betsy also saw his confidence and work ethic.
"The preparation is what gives him his confidence from the time that I have been around him," Getsy said. "Like I said in that Senior Bowl week, in the beginning of the week I kinda thought he was a nervous dude, but I think it was because he was working his tail off so much. By the time we got to Wednesday, Thursday, I mean, I saw a guy ready to rock and roll.
"So I think he has done that. I think he has just put the work in, he's proved to the guys and that's what they feel on the daily."
The Bears are just hoping Bagent is ready to rock and roll now that it's official and he'll be lining up across from the Raiders defense in his first NFL start.
