Bengals Free Agent Grade: Trent Brown Brings Stability to Offensive Line
CINCINNATI — The Bengals' offensive line got a boost last week when they signed Trent Brown to a one-year contract.
The former Pro Bowler is expected to start at right tackle. He'll turn 31 on April 13, but made it clear that he's a perfect fit in the Bengals' pass-first offense led by Joe Burrow.
"That's what I do best," Brown said when asked about 1-on-1 pass blocking. "I think that's why I'm here. And like you say, you won't find another tackle in the league or in the game of football today that does that better than me."
We haven't received contract details about Brown's deal, but it's reasonable to think it's much lower than the $15 million per year Jonah Williams agreed to with the Cardinals ($30 million total). It's also fair to say Brown is a better fit in the Bengals' pass-first system.
The veteran has missed time due to injury, including this past season where he appeared in just 11 games for the Patriots. It's worth noting that he appeared in all 17 games for New England in 2022.
Despite the injuries, this is a low-risk, high-reward move. Brown was clearly the best offensive tackle left on the market and should be a great fit alongside a veteran heavy Bengals' line that has won five Super Bowl rings.
Orlando Brown Jr. (1), Ted Karras (2), Alex Cappa (1) and Brown (1) have all won a World Championship.
It's hard to see the negative in signing a proven player like Brown that has the ability to play both tackle spots. The Bengals deserve praise for adding him and they should be better on offense with him on the roster.
Final Grade: A
