Bengals Pass on Ja'Marr Chase, Beef Up Line in Latest Mock Draft

The Bengals address their biggest weakness

CINCINNATI — The Bengals' offensive line is their biggest weakness going into the 2021 offseason.

Plenty of fans have had their eyes on Oregon tackle Penei Sewell, who is considered the top tackle in the draft.

Those fans get their wish in Pro Football Focus' latest mock draft. Sewell falls to the Bengals thanks to a couple of surprising picks.

Trevor Lawrence is the first selection, following by Justin Fields, DeVonta Smith and Micah Parsons.

"It will be an absolute no-brainer if Sewell falls to them at Pick 5 because, as special as it would be to take a receiver like Ja’Marr Chase, the team and fanbase need a collective sigh of relief more than a new toy,"

Seth Galina wrote.

"That sigh of relief comes in the form of Penei Sewell. The Oregon tackle is as smooth as they come; he never looks like he’s in a hurry and just swallows up anyone who dares come at him. He allowed only seven pressures in all of 2019.

"The only knock on him is that sometimes the pass-rushers in the Pac-12 don’t look like they’ve ever played football before and often rushed right down the middle of Sewell only for him to eat them whole. The horrid state of the Pac-12 is on display whenever you put the Sewell tape on. Still, he can play, and that shouldn’t distract you from how good this guy is."

The Jets are expected to trade down or take a non-quarterback with the second pick. Obviously they didn't do that in this mock draft.

Smith going to the Dolphins at three would be surprising, especially if LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is still available.

The biggest shock is Parsons going off the board to Atlanta at No. 4, which is the best case scenario for the Bengals.

They're able to take Chase, Sewell and entertain trade offers for the fifth pick with BYU quarterback Zach Wilson still on the board.

Ultimately, they take Sewell, which is probably what they'll do if the same situation unfolds in April.

Things could change if they sign one of the top offensive tackles in free agency

If you're looking for one of the best draft scenarios for the Bengals, this is it.

They don't reunite Joe Burrow with Chase, opting to add the ultra talented Sewell to an offensive line that's in desperate need of a talent infusion.
