Report: Bengals to Interview Former Cowboys Running Backs Coach Gary Brown

Brown took last season off due to health concerns

CINCINNATI — The Bengals' 2021 coaching staff is coming together after organization decided to make changes following a 4-11-1 season.

Cincinnati brought in Frank Pollack to coach the offensive line. They hired Marion Hobby to coach the defensive linemen and now they're bringing in another experienced coach to interview for the vacant running backs coaching job.

Former Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown has an interview scheduled with the Bengals next week according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Brown took this season off due to health concerns, but he's healthy and hoping to get back on the sidelines in 2021.

He served as the Cowboys' running backs coach from 2013-19. Brown worked with Pollack in Dallas for five seasons (2013-17).

The familiarity is a positive, especially with the Bengals hoping to remake a rushing attack that struggled for most of the 2020 season.

Pollack admitted that he talked with Bengals head coach Zac Taylor about potential candidates.

“We did discuss possible names that he (Taylor) might want to visit with and whatnot," Pollack said last week. "If it comes to a point where he (Taylor) would like my input further, I’d be more than happy to give it to him, but he’s more than capable of making those decisions.”

Brown helped DeMarco Murray have the best season of his career in 2014, finishing with 1,845 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

That success continued with Ezekiel Elliott, who averaged over 1,300 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns per season in four years (2016-19) with Brown as his running backs coach.

Before going to Dallas, Brown served as the running backs coach in Cleveland from 2009-12. He helped Peyton Hillis top the 1,100-yard rushing mark in 2011.

He spent six years in the collegiate ranks before going to Cleveland.

Jemal Singleton was the Bengals' running backs coach for the past two seasons. His contract expired and he took the same position at the University of Kentucky.
