Jessie Bates Expected To Skip OTAs and Training Camp After Being Tagged By Bengals
CINCINNATI — Star safety Jessie Bates "has no intentions of playing under the franchise tag" according to Tyler Dragon of USA Today.
Dragon reports that Bates is planning to skip OTAs and training camp if he can't reach a long-term deal with the Bengals.
The 25-year-old posted career-lows in multiple categories last season, finishing with 88 tackles, four passes defensed and one interception.
Bates caught fire in the postseason and helped the Bengals win the AFC Championship. He compiled 20 tackles, six passes defensed and two interceptions in four playoff games.
The Bengals were unable to sign him to a long-term deal prior to the 2021 season. Contract talks broke off during training camp.
“I’m not too worried about being the highest paid safety," Bates said in February. "But I do know value over cost and I think that is something that we are going to continue to evaluate.”
Bates would make $12.91 million on the franchise tag, but wants a long-term deal. The team placed the tag on him in March.
