CINCINNATI — If Joe Burrow was waiting on Justin Herbert to sign an extension, then the wait is over.

Herbert and the Chargers agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million contract on Tuesday according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

The 25-year-old is under contract through the 2029 season. Herbert becomes the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. He'll receive $218.7 million in guarantees according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That means the focus will shift to the Bengals and Burrow. When will they sign their star quarterback to an extension?

There's been speculation about Burrow waiting for Herbert to sign so that he could ensure his next contract would make him the highest-paid signal-caller in the league.

If that's the case, then his agent and the Bengals should be able to work out a deal in the near future.

The good news is that Herbert is signing a five-year contract. If Burrow does the same, it would keep him in Cincinnati for the next seven seasons and give the team some cap flexibility to pay Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and other key pieces on the roster.
