Would Buffalo Bills Fans Be Satisfied By a Single Josh Allen Super Bowl?

The Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen are still hunting for their first Super Bowl. But with such an incredible talent under center, is one enough?

The Buffalo Bills are one of 12 teams to never hoist the Lombardi Trophy. They may have come closer than their trophy-less counterparts, appearing in four straight Super Bowls, but falling just short has become a way of life in Buffalo.

That trend has continued with superstar quarterback Josh Allen under center. Blame the coaching staff, the front office, Patrick Mahomes, or your deity of choice, but Allen is yet to reach the big game, despite his immense talent.

Some figure it’s a matter of time before the Bills hang a banner. Others feel they are ordained to be not quite good enough

Regardless, it’s clear no one is giving Buffalo a better chance for a title than Allen. As perhaps the second-best quarterback in the sport – and at worst, top-five – Allen has the requisite talent to go toe-to-toe with any passer in football.

Despite the heavy roster turnover and the implications of his cap hit, Buffalo’s Super Bowl window isn’t over. The mere presence of Allen pries it open, even if the Bills’ best chance at a championship has passed them by.

There’s an argument to be made that with a quarterbacking advantage over basically the entire league, a Super Bowl shouldn’t be some gaudy aspiration, it should be the expectation. However, some of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the league have come and gone without multiple Super Bowls to their name.

“Perhaps this is a terrible take or maybe it’s not,” Matthew Bové said. “But I really believe if the Bills win one Super Bowl with Josh Allen as the quarterback he becomes the most valuable athlete in the history of Buffalo professional sports.”

He’s right. Jim Kelly was incredible during Buffalo’s prior stretch of playoff dominance, but few would prefer the Hall of Famer to Allen, who is undoubtedly on his way.

This franchise, this fanbase, has come so close, so many times that the weight of a single Super Bowl is almost immeasurable. He wouldn’t just be the best player in franchise history, etched into immortality in Western New York. He may already be. Allen winning a Super Bowl, regardless of how the team fares in the years after and how his tenure ends, would be the perpetrator of a city’s defining moment.

Just 18 quarterbacks in the history of the sport have won multiple Super Bowls. Absolute locks for the Hall of Fame have won fewer, with little doubt over their impact on a franchise.

Winning multiple Super Bowls is certainly a possibility with Allen under center. But winning one would be more than enough for Allen to deliver on the promise of his abilities and take his place among the pantheon of some of the best players to grace the gridiron. Among Buffalo legends, it wouldn’t be particularly close.

It cannot be overstated how meaningful a Super Bowl would be to Bills Mafia. While far from a guarantee, there’s no question a single championship would be more than enough to satisfy the city.
