Aaron Rodgers MVP Debate: Tyreek, McCaffrey, 'What If?' on Bills QB Josh Allen

Aaron Rodgers MVP Debate: Tyreek Hill, Christian McCaffrey, 'What If?' on Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen

The NFL MVP award has by and large become a quarterback award. Will 2023 be the year that changes that?

Injured New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers - who as a member of the Green Bay Packers won four such trophies - is talking up the idea of Christian McCaffrey or Tyreek Hill winning the prestigious award for their work this season.

And McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers and Hill of the Miami Dolphins have both been brilliant, of course.

But so have a couple of QBs. Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson is the most important player on the AFC's best team.

But what about Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen?

"I know Josh has had turnovers this year,'' Rodgers said in his paid spot on the "Pat McAfee Show,'' "but the guy has 40 combined touchdowns this year!''

Interestingly, Allen is third in the league in passing touchdowns and is fourth in the league in rushing touchdowns. So when we talk about the dual threat of Jackson? We need to talk the same way about Allen.

And then there is Rodgers' estimation of what might unfold down the stretch for a 9-6 Bills team that is suddenly as hot (winners of three straight) as it is talented.

Rodgers' thought is keyed by this: "If the Bills win out ...'' as he suggests Allen might be responsible for eight more TDs in the final two regular-season games.

NFL MVP Betting Odds: Where Does Josh Allen Stand After Week 16?

"If they finish the last two and win out, and if Miami loses their next one, the Week 18 (game) is going to be for the division," Rodgers said. "What if Josh has eight touchdowns the last two weeks and finishes with 48 combined touchdowns? How do you not put him in the conversation?"

Answer: Voters would put Josh Allen in the conversation. Indeed, he is already there.
