Bills Coach Sean McDermott Picks Defensive Play-Caller - It's Him
PHOENIX - Sean McDermott's top choice to replace the temporarily retired Leslie Frazier as the Buffalo Bills' defensive play-caller is ...
Sean McDermott.
"I'm gonna be the play-caller," McDermott said Monday here in Phoenix at the NFL owners meetings. "I have tons of confidence in the guys that we have around me that if I need to toss it to them from time to time, I can do that."
"The guys'' include two former defensive coordinators on staff in addition to McDermott: Eric Washington and Al Holcomb. McDermott did suggest that if for some reason the new setup experienced too many bumps in the road, he could pass along the responsibilities.
But, he said, “It’s heading towards me really at this point.''
For six seasons, McDermott was the Carolina coordinator before coming to Buffalo in 2017. Before that, he was the coordinator for two years for the Philadelphia Eagles.
McDermott said he believes he'll be able to continue meeting all of the other responsibilities that are a part of being an NFL head coach. But again, he's got a bail-out if needed right along side him.
