Could Bills Cut Tre'Davious White? All-Pro CB a Potential Cap Casualty

The Buffalo Bills will have to make some difficult decisions this offseason just to get under the salary cap.

There's no two ways around it, the Buffalo Bills are in salary cap hell this offseason.

According to Spotrac, Buffalo is currently more than $54 million over the 2024 salary cap, with only the New Orleans Saints being in a deeper hole. The Bills can get closer to the cap by restructuring some of their bigger contracts, but to get under it, they'll have to make some difficult decisions.

One of those decisions could be parting ways with Tre'Davious White, the former All-Pro cornerback who has been wrecked by injuries lately. According to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, cutting White to save cap space is a very real possibility.

"The first draft pick of the Sean McDermott era, White is now 29 and coming off two major injuries in three seasons — a torn ACL in 2021 and a torn Achilles in 2023," Buscaglia wrote. "Cutting him would clear just over $6 million in cap space, but the situation could go either way and is more complex than just saving cap room.

They love the player and want White to get healthy before making a decision. But they may run out of time for him to do so before his $1.5 million roster bonus is due a few days into the new league year, which would take away 25 percent of their potential savings."

In more exact terms, the Bills could save roughly $6 million in cap space by cutting White, but it would come with around $10.4 million in dead money. If they were to designate him as a post-June 1 cut, though, those figures would roughly flip.

White, 29, has been a tremendous piece of the Bills' defense since he was drafted in 2017. The LSU product has recorded 311 total tackles, 68 passes defended and 18 interceptions in seven seasons.

In recent years, though, injuries have derailed White's extremely-promising career. He suffered a torn ACL late in the 2021 season, which caused him to miss most of the following season as well. Then he suffered a torn Achilles early in the 2023 season, marking his second season-ending injury in the last three years.

Bills Have a Von Miller Problem; Trade Incoming?

In an ideal world, White would've never had such terrible injury luck and remained a star with the Bills for years to come. This isn't an ideal world, though, and the harsh reality of the NFL could lead to White's time in Buffalo coming to a premature end.
