Bills CB Battle Unresolved After Preseason

The Buffalo Bills are taking their time deciding who the No. 2 cornerback will be for the season.

The Buffalo Bills have seen plenty of position battles throughout camp and preseason. However, one has gone unresolved heading into Week 1. The cornerback lining up across from Tre’Davious White, the team's CB1, is uncertain heading into the start of regular season.

The team has had three games to decipher who should be the second starting cornerback, and different players at the position have shined in the role. Today, Christian Benford excelled as CB2, having deflected a pass and showing tight coverage.

Dane Jackson has shown his abilities in preseason, too, and this leaves second-year Kaiir Elam with the potential of being CB4 just a year after being selected as a first-round pick.

After the game, head coach Sean McDermott, the defensive play caller, said Elam is still in the mix for the CB2 position and stated that the competition remains open. He was the third of the three cornerbacks in the competition to enter the game for the second straight time.

It's no knock on Elam, but his opportunity might just be waning. Both Benford and Jackson have shined as CB2, and evidently, the competition shrinking to just those two players to start the regular season doesn't seem all that crazy.

Again, the gap between Jackson and Benford is way shorter than Elam with either of those two. Elam might find himself outside of the competition very soon, though McDermott says the competition remains open.

For Elam, he must stay concentrated on making a positive impact on a consistent basis between now and the start of the regular season.

Between this and what wide receivers are still on the team once the final 53-man roster is finalized will be two interesting Bills' storylines to keep tabs on heading into the Week 1 matchup against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
