Bills RB James Cook Has New Jersey Number

After just one season, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is ditching his jersey number.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook didn't exactly start his first year in the NFL off on a positive note, fumbling the first touch of his career in Week 1 back in September. It was a bit easier to swallow considering the Bills trounced the defending champion Los Angeles Rams in a 31-10 win at SoFi Stadium.

Cook ended up finishing off his rookie season on solid footing, but maybe a change in jersey number will provide him with a bit better mojo as he begins his second season.

The Bills revealed Friday that Cook will be switching his jersey number from No. 28 to No. 4, the number he wore in college when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs.

It's also the number Cook's older brother, Dalvin, currently wears for the Minnesota Vikings. If you're a conspiracy wiz, this probably takes the Bills out of the trade conversation for Dalvin, a potential deal that already seemed to have very little chance of happening despite the reports that the Vikings were seeking a trade for the star ball-carrier.

Cook (the Bills' version that is) finished his rookie season with 16 appearances, totaling 89 carries for 507 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 21 catches for 180 yards and another score.

After fumbling on his first carry of the season, Cook didn't let the ball leave his hands for the rest of the year.

He's now potentially in line to receive an RB1-like role with the departure of Devin Singletary, but the signing of former New England Patriots running back Damien Harris could also mean the new pair will split reps for a Bills offense that hasn't had a 1,000-yard rusher since LeSean McCoy in 2017.
