Bills GM Brandon Beane Calls for Josh Allen Changes: ‘We Don’t Need (It)!’

The Buffalo Bills have made it clear that they want quarterback Josh Allen to be more cautious as a runner.

The Buffalo Bills have their franchise quarterback in Josh Allen, whose exciting play style has captivated the eyes of fans. But that same style is a cause for concern for the Bills' front office and coaching staff.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane spoke about those concerns in a recent interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio. While in Phoenix for the NFL Owners' Meetings, he revealed some of his conversations with Allen about not taking so many hits.

“He gets in the moment, and he is so super competitive,” Beane said.

Allen possesses one of the biggest arms in the NFL, combined with some athleticism that allows him to be a playmaker outside of the pocket as well. Allen is by no means a Lamar Jackson or a Michael Vick-type player but is a proven threat in the running game.

Historically, scrambling quarterbacks like Cam Newton, someone who also possessed an "NFL arm" and freakish athleticism, had his career shortened due to injuries.

After Allen's UCL sprain last season, which at one point seemed like it could force him to miss time, the concerns about long-term durability are setting in for the Bills.

"If it is the first quarter of week 2, we don't need you trying to run over a linebacker or a safety," Beane said.

For the Bills, it is not about negating Allen's legs. Instead, they want him to be smarter about which hits he takes.
