Leslie Frazier Reveals Goals, Looks Toward 2024 After Bills Exit
Back in late February, then-Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier announced he would be temporarily stepping away from the team and taking a leave of absence.
At the time, he did not indicate his reason for leaving the team but did say he would return in 2024. But at the time, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said, “It’s not clear that he’ll be back in Buffalo in 2024.”
Frazier attended the "Coach Accelerator" program at the spring league meetings last week, which allowed him to spend time with team owners who may be making hiring decisions eventually.
Frazier told Albert Breer of SI.com that it “was really a good environment to say hello and let your hair down and just talk” and that he hopes to have more conversations about head coaching positions in early 2024.
“Hopefully, an owner will give me a chance to talk to him about an opportunity,” Frazier said. “If that doesn’t happen, I’m good. I’ve had a good career. I’m good. My goal is to be a head coach. I know I don’t have much time left, I’m at an age where it seems like owners are going younger and younger, but I think I have some things I can bring to the table. We’ll see what happens.”
Frazier, 64, indicated that he felt good about his decision to walk away from the Bills and the NFL for a season, and it allowed him to "get recharged and re-energized" before returning to the league he's spent 20-plus years working in.
During his time in Buffalo, the Bills were one of the best defenses in the league. In 2021, Buffalo had an elite defensive unit that allowed the fewest passing yards (272.8) and points per game (17). This past season, the Bills' defense put up similarly elite numbers, surrendering the fifth-fewest rushing yards per game (104.6) and the second-fewest points per game (17.9).
