Buffalo Bills Ex Leslie Frazier Reacts To Josh Allen's Woes, Sean McDermott's Chance for Playoff Run
“There’s a lot going on right now.”
Leave it to the soft-spoken Leslie Frazier, the former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator who undoubtedly has unique insight into some of the shocking struggles of a Super Bowl-worthy team performing at a non-playoff-worthy level, to maintain a high level of dignity when offering analysis.
And yet, “There’s a lot going on right now'' actually says a mouthful.
Frazier, 64, who stepped away from coaching last offseason and now contributes on NFL Network, is offering his reaction (during an appearance on CBS Sports Radio on Thursday (via the Buffalo News) to the Bills' relative woes, to successfully defending quarterback Josh Allen, to this week's coaching staff change and ultimately, to what he thinks the 2023 fate of head coach Sean McDermott's Bills might be.
On Allen, who is filling up the stat sheet with both TDs and interceptions: “If you don’t have to worry about running and making splash plays with his legs, then you’re just going to play coverage like teams have been doing ... It’s worked out well (for opposing defenses.) ... 'Let’s just sit back and play zone. He’s not running. We don’t have to worry about that,' and teams are having success.''
'A Lot of Bad Football': Bills Fall to Broncos in Crushing Loss
On the firing of offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and the elevation into the job of QB coach Joe Brady: Dorsey "will "land on his feet. It’s not a situation that anybody would want to be put in, but he’ll learn from this experience, and I think he’ll be a better coordinator down the line. ... Putting Joe Brady in that position, it’s almost like starting over again in some ways. I’m sure Sean was looking for ways to energize the whole team and inject some confidence. ...''
On what might be the divisive downside of the change: "They’ve got the talent. They’re capable of doing it. I picked them to go to the Super Bowl ... It’s just a matter of how the guys respond to this change. Is it one where it divides the locker room or are guys going to come together, rally together and play above the circumstances? Nobody knows that.”
'I'm Really Hurting!' Frazier Analyzes Bills' Firing of Coach
On his faith in McDermott and the roster to rebound from 5-5 and make a run: "Absolutely. He’s got a strong staff that will support him and help him get the ship turned in the right direction. Even though they are on the (playoff window) outside looking in right now, you look at all the teams with four or five losses, they’re still right there and capable of making something happen. He’s proven in the past that he can lead a team to success and he can do it again.”
Still, the broad answer to the big question lingers. "What's wrong with the Buffalo Bills?'' the NFL world wants to know.
“There’s a lot going on right now'' might be the exact right answer.
