Bills Lead Jets at Halftime After Aaron Rodgers Ruled Out
A highly-anticipated season-opening matchup between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets took a disturbing turn on Monday night at MetLife Stadium when celebrated veteran quarterback arrival Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of the game with an ankle injury on New York's first series of the game.
Despite all the drama, the Bills headed into halftime with a 13-3 lead.
The Bills went on to take leads of 3-0 and 10-3 after finally finding the end zone late in the second quarter, then turned up the heat defensively on Jets backup Zach Wilson when linebacker Matt Milano intercepted him.
That enabled them to add to their lead when Tyler Bass made good on a field-goal attempt from 34 yards with 17 seconds remaining to take things to intermission.
The Jets earlier were able to tie the game at 3-3 in the second quarter when Greg Zuerlein kicked a 26-yard field goal.
That score was set up by an 83-yard run by Breece Hall that immediately followed an interception of frustrated Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Allen responded, though, with a magnificent scramble to buy time to complete a 5-yard TD pass to Stefon Diggs.
Rodgers had gone down on a sack by Leonard Floyd two plays after barely escaping a sack attempt by Greg Rousseau.
After a short time in the medical tent, Rodgers was carted off with an ankle injury.
In the meantime, the Jets turned back to Wilson, who failed to convert on third down, ending their first possession.
Wilson did find some rhythm after the Jets forced another Bills punt, throwing to Allen Lazard for a 22-yard gain and a first down near midfield. But Milano responded by tackling Dalvin Cook for a 4-yard loss before Jordan Phillips dropped Wilson for the Bills' second sack.
