Bills Not Retaining Offensive Coach Mike Shula: Report
Neither Shula nor Belichick will be repping the AFC East anymore.
Per Sal Capaccio of WGR, the Buffalo Bills will not retain senior offensive assistant Mike Shula following the expiration of his contract. Shula spent two years in Western New York as part of a nomadic NFL coaching career.
He took on a bit of a larger role in the Buffalo offense following the ousting of coordinator Ken Dorsey, which paved the way to strong postings in a five-game winning streak to close out the regular season.
A son of Don, the NFL's all-time leader in coaching wins (and a longtime Buffalo rival based in Miami), Shula is perhaps best known on the gridiron coaching circuit for his four-year term (2003-06) as the head coach at the University of Alabama, serving as the last full-time head coach before Nick Saban's arrival.
His penultimate group notably finished eighth in the final 2005 polls with a 10-2 record. Those victories (along with six more in the following season) were later vacated by NCAA violations.
Bills Sign Backup to Extension
Since then, the former Crimson Tide quarterback has held a variety of coaching spots throughout the NFL, his most lucrative work coming in 2015 when he oversaw Cam Newton's MVP season as the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator. He previously helped Newton take home the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Prior to his Buffalo entry, Shula was the quarterbacks coach with the Denver Broncos.
Though Shula is gone, the namesake remains on the NFL sidelines, as Mike's brother Chris still serves as the Los Angeles Rams' defense coordinator.
