Buffalo Bills Notebook: 3 Takeaways From Comeback Win vs. Los Angeles Chargers
It wasn't for the faint of heart, but the Buffalo Bills completed the comeback in the fourth quarter to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 24-22 on Saturday at SoFi Stadium.
The win was the Bills' (9-6) third straight, and they jumped to the No. 6 seed in the AFC after being out of the playoff picture heading into Saturday.
Josh Allen orchestrated a 12-play drive that included two crucial third-down conversions and led to a 29-yard field goal from Tyler Bass with 31 seconds left to play. On the ensuing drive, defensive tackle Ed Oliver all but sealed the game with a sack on the Chargers' first play of the drive.
Here are three takeaways from the Bills' come-from-behind win over the Chargers (5-10).
Josh Allen Makes History
For the ups and downs that seemingly come with every game Allen plays, he is building a Hall of Fame type of career and added two accolades to his ever-budding resume.
With three touchdowns against Los Angeles, Allen became the first player to score at least 40 touchdowns in four consecutive seasons. He also scored at least one rushing and one passing touchdown for the 11th time this season, a record he already broke earlier this season.
Allen completed 15 of 21 passes for 237 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also scored two touchdowns on the ground. Allen's lone touchdown pass was a 57-yard bomb to Gabe Davis in the 2nd quarter.
Davis had one of his best games of the season with four catches for 130 yards plus the 57-yard score.
On the game-winning drive, Allen completed 4 of 5 passes for 51 yards, including crucial third-down conversions to Stefon Diggs and Khalil Shakir. He threaded an 11-yard pass along the sideline to Diggs on 3rd and 8 from the Chargers' 45-yard line with 2:56 left in the game, and then on the ensuing third down, he escaped a Chargers blitz before finding Shakir for a 15-yard pass that all but iced the game and set the stage for Bass' field goal.
For as little as Allen had to do in the Bills' 31-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, it was a juxtaposition against the Chargers. And when the Bills needed Allen most, he proved why he's one of the elite quarterbacks in the game and is etching his name into the NFL's history books.
Bills QB Josh Allen Sets NFL Record vs. Chargers
Ed Oliver Dominates:
The Bills' defense bent but never broke despite being put in multiple tough situations against a spirited Chargers offense, and that was largely due to Oliver's ability to wreck the game.
He had two of the team's five sacks, including one with around 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter that all but ended the game with Los Angeles having no timeouts. Oliver also had two tackles for loss.
Oliver has already set career highs with 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss.
Buffalo's defense has been regaining its form from earlier in the season, only allowing 16.33 points per game during its win streak. If the defense can stay hot heading into a potential playoff run, performances like the one Oliver has on Saturday will be paramount.
Playoff Odds Increasing:
The Bills had no margin for error coming out of their bye week with five games left to work their way into a playoff spot.
With three straight wins, Buffalo now holds the 6th seed, and Next Gen Stats gives a 75 percent chance of making the playoffs. If everything breaks right, they could be playing for the AFC East title in Week 18 when they face the Miami Dolphins.
Oftentimes, it's the team that gets hot at the end of the season that makes a run in the playoffs. If the Bills can ride this momentum into a fifth-straight playoff appearance, this may be the most dangerous they've ever been during their Super Bowl window.
