Bills Radio Announcer John Murphy Continues Recovery From January Stroke

As Buffalo Bills safety Demar Hamlin continued to make progress after suffering a cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game, news got worse for the team as the long-time radio voice of the team, John Murphy suffered a stroke in early January.

Murphy missed the Monday night game where Hamlin suffered his cardiac arrest due to being "under the weather," according to a team's spokesperson. Murphy was later diagnosed as having suffered a stroke and continues his recovery.

Murphy has not spoken publicly since his stroke, but he did attend the Bills minicamp this week and spoke with the Buffalo News via text to say he's unsure of his future.

“I’m going to wait until late July before I decide whether to come back. Still some recovery to do,” Murphy wrote.

Chris Brown, a Bills beat reporter and former play-by-play announcer of the Buffalo Destroyers has filled in for Murphy since the stroke, and is expected to continue to do so.

The Lockport, New York native took over as the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bills radio network following the retirement of Van Miller in 2003. From 1984 to 1989, and again from 1994 to 1993, Murphy was the team's color analyst alongside Miller.

In 2019, Murphy was announced as an inductee into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association's Hall of Fame.
