Bills WR Depth Facing 'Another Good Test' vs. Steelers
One of the biggest storylines for the Buffalo Bills ahead of the NFL regular season is the receiver position. Evidently, if the receiver corps puts out solid output for quarterback Josh Allen, the team's ceiling raises exponentially.
Stefon Diggs is a premiere talent not just at the position, but in the entire NFL. If the rest of the receiving corps can provide great contribution, the offense will be in an incredible position.
Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey spoke about the receivers and their production so far this offseason when talking to the media on Wednesday.
"I think all those guys have talent," Dorsey said. "We've got a good group of receivers from top to bottom that have different traits whether it be size, speed, quickness, whatever those things are, but it's a harder position within the offense to learn because we try to move those guys around a lot."
The skillset Gabe Davis brings is unique, and could play off Diggs' game well, but he needs to find the next level of consistency this season. For the duo to have a breakout year, Davis has to provide his contributions on a game-by-game basis.
According to Dorsey, signs are pointing toward improvement in that regard. Guys like second-year receiver Khalil Shakir and the newly-signed Deonte Harty will get another chance to prove this during Buffalo's second preseason game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"The lack of mental mistakes was extremely encouraging from that group, and this week will be another good test of that," Dorsey said. "... Especially when games are tight and pressure is on."
Having different receivers that can be used in various situations could be key for the Bills. Outside of Diggs and Davis, receivers will have to step up in clutch moments or when a game gets difficult. The diversity in skillsets and archetypes could be key in that as Dorsey and Allen will have different weapons to defer to outside of the top two talents.
With more depth, Shakir, heading into his second season, is a player to look out for to be utilized on a deeper level. His room for opportunity and growth will be there, and moving forward, could be a key or Allen and the offense.
The Bills will get another chance at growth on Saturday against the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
