Report: 'Zero' Chance Buffalo Bills Fire Coach Sean McDermott

Despite growing criticism, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott's job is reportedly safe this season.

Perhaps more than ever, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott is feeling the heat.

McDermott has helped the Bills return to prominence over the past few years, but this season has been a trying one. Not only are the Bills 6-6, already doubling their loss total from last season, but most of those losses have come in heartbreaking fashion. In fact, all six of those losses have come by one score, while Buffalo has only won two such games.

The Bills have already made a change to their coaching staff by firing offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey earlier this month, and many fans have now shifted their anger to McDermott. However, it seems that McDermott's job is safe, at least for the time being.

Tim Graham of The Athletic reports that, according to anonymous team sources, there is "zero" chance that the Bills move on from McDermott this season.

"Asked if there was any chance [Bills owner Terry] Pegula would fire McDermott, two of the sources replied 'Zero,'" Graham wrote. "The other two sources said they would be shocked if Pegula made such a move. All four sources have intimate knowledge of the Pegula-McDermott relationship."

Even with the recent criticism McDermott has faced, it's easy to see why McDermott has a good amount of job security. For starters, the Bills just announced an extension for the coach that keeps him under contract through the 2027 season, but also consider the team's history before McDermott arrived.

Prior to hiring McDermott in 2017, the Bills had employed nine different coaches in The 21st Century, including interims. Of that lot, only Wade Phillips (1998-2000) and Gregg Williams (2001-2003) finished their tenures with winning records. Additionally, Buffalo didn't even make its first playoff appearance of the century until McDermott's first season in 2017, and he's only missed the postseason once in his first six seasons with the club.

McDermott isn't a perfect coach by any means, and with the team's recent play, it's not hard to see why many fans want change. However, he has brought the team to heights not seen in decades, so it makes sense why he has a bit of a cushion.

"Barring catastrophe, those close to Pegula insist McDermott will remain a driving force in molding the Bills’ future," Graham wrote.
