Buffalo Bills Coach Sean McDermott Defends Ken Dorsey Amidst Calls For Job
For a team with so much firepower on offense, the Buffalo Bills sure are struggling on that side of the ball.
The Bills were on a hot streak with three straight games of scoring at least 37 points, but the past month and change has been much more of a struggle. Buffalo's highest point total in its last five games was 25, and even that came in a loss to the New England Patriots. While the Bills averaged 35.8 points in their first four games, that number has plummeted to 20.2 over their last five, not to mention that many of the points they have scored have been very late in games.
With the offense all out of sorts, many Buffalo fans have begun calling for offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey's job. Despite that, coach Sean McVay made it abundantly clear that the Bills won't be making a change any time soon.
“I get it. I understand everyone’s frustration,” McDermott said. “I absolutely do. We’re working extremely hard to make the adjustments we have to make. Ken is doing the same. So, I remain confident in Ken and our offensive staff, and we continue to work hard at improving.”
If there's any positive to take away from the Bills' recent performances on offense, it's the fact that they've looked significantly better when going up-tempo. It's a large reason why they've had a much easier time scoring late in games than earlier on. At the very least, Dorsey recognizes this and is working to implement more no-huddle offense.
“But yeah, I think it’s definitely something that we want to continue to utilize. We just have to make sure we’re effective when we do, and we can stay on the field and continue to do that. So we’re going to make sure we’re doing it in a smart, efficient, effective way and utilize it when we can.”
Dorsey, and McDermott for that matter, have drawn the ire of Bills fans thanks to the team's recent struggles. The two coaches are very ware of the team's problems, and are working to make the necessary changes.
“That’s what we’re working on. That’s what I’m working on here,” he said. “We’ve won a lot of games here, and for good reason, right? So, we’ve got to continue to make the appropriate adjustments and put ourselves in position to win games. That’s what we’re here to do. That’s what we’ll continue doing.”
