Bills, Stefon Diggs ‘In a Good Spot’ for Training Camp
The toothpaste has been put back into the tube between Stefon Diggs and the Buffalo Bills. Whether it stays there or not remains to be seen, but for now, the All-Pro receiver appears set for his fourth season with the team.
Coach Sean McDermott was asked about where the relationship between Diggs and the team stands at the outset of training camp, and quickly redirected his answer to talking about the Bills.
"We're in a good spot," McDermott said Wednesday. "As far as the team is concerned, yeah, we've got a lot of work to do. So I think that's really our focus, and it should be our focus. [It's] about the team and making sure we're putting the work out here that we need to put in."
Of course, this is an entirely different tone than the one that McDermott had when he acknowledged that he was "very concerned" about Diggs not being present at mandatory minicamp in June. McDermott later told the media he excused Diggs from the mandatory minicamp, saying that the two sides needed "some space." Evidently, there was enough space given for the two sides to come to the conclusion that they would remain together for this season, at the very least.
Since being acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in a trade prior to the 2020 season, Diggs has become one of the NFL's top receivers. He was a First-Team All-Pro in 2020 and has caught 338 passes for 4,189 yards and 29 touchdowns from quarterback Josh Allen.
Over the same period, the Bills have reached the AFC Divisional Round in three consecutive seasons, including an AFC Championship appearance in 2020. However, while they were ahead of schedule in 2020, back-to-back crushing losses in the Divisional Round have put quite a bit of pressure on Diggs, Allen and the Bills to get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl this season.
