Bills Super Bowl Watch: Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Injured, Eagles Lead at Halftime
Headed into Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and 2022 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes was set to play at less-than 100 percent with the high-ankle sprain that he suffered in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Divisional.
But while the ailment didn't prevent him from missing the AFC Championship along with there being almost zero doubt that he'd miss the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, Mahomes' re-aggravated his ankle after getting tackled awkwardly late in the second quarter on Sunday.
Already with momentum on their side before Mahomes' re-injury, the Eagles capped off their stellar first half with a buzzer-beating field goal to take a 24-14 lead headed into the locker room.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts ended the half having the clear edge over Mahomes. Despite blatantly losing a fumble that was recovered by Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton for a 36-yard touchdown, Hurts went 17 of 22 passing for 183 yards and a touchdown along with 11 carries for 63 yards and two more scores in the first half.
Kansas City's game-tying fumble recovery shifted momentum in a blink, but Hurts responded with a four-yard rushing score to reclaim the lead with 2:20 left in the second quarter.
The Chiefs will have an uphill battle headed into the third quarter, but Mahomes' health will obviously be something to monitor.
