Bills' Sean McDermott 'Can't Believe' He's Saying Goodbye To Tre'Davious White
The Buffalo Bills had to say some painful goodbyes this offseason, perhaps none more so than the one they said to cornerback Tre'Davious White.
A 2017 first-round pick, White was a key part of the Bills' defense for several years, earning Pro Bowl nods in 2019 and 2020. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his career soon after as he would suffer a torn ACL and a torn Achilles less than two years apart.
The Bills released White with a post-June 1 designation earlier this month, a move that saved them over $10 million in cap space, but at the cost of losing their once-prized cornerback.
Even weeks after White's release, Bills coach Sean McDermott is still processing the cornerback's departure.
"Emotional right? Because you can't believe it's what we are discussing. You know eventually, it's going to come because of the lifespan of an NFL player," McDermott said, per WKBW. "But it came way too early in my mind, right? And I'm sure in his mind as well.
"It's to me tragic in some ways because of the injuries. Had not the injuries occurred, who knows where his time in Buffalo would've taken him and us. I think he's one of the best defensive backs to ever play in Buffalo. I really believe that. He's all class all the time. And he works his tail off. And he's one of the best human beings I know. From what he came from and how he's not only lifted himself up but lifted his family up and the way he's lifted our team up over the years it's just to me a very unfortunate situation with the injuries. Sorry, it's sad to see him go"
White, 29, has not yet signed with a new team, but his recruitment process is already in full force. The LSU product has already met with four teams: the Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants and Tennesee Titans.
Throughout his seven seasons in Buffalo, White started all 82 games he appeared in while recording 311 total tackles, 68 passes defended and 18 interceptions. The Bills will likely target another cornerback to fill White's void in the secondary, but moving on from a player beloved by the team and fanbase is never easy.
