Bills WR Trent Sherfield Reveals Reason for Signing: 'My DNA'
Since coming into the NFL in 2018, receiver Trent Sherfield has been looking for a long-term home.
Coming out of Vanderbilt, Sherfield signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent. He had a decent rookie season for someone in his position, but rarely played the next two years. Sherfield then had another quiet season with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and earned consistent playing time once again as the Miami Dolphins' No. 3 receiver in 2022.
After his breakout performance last season, Sherfield had quite a few suitors as a free agent this offseason. Ultimately, he decided to join the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal. Now a few months later, Sherfield is fitting right in with his new team.
“Coming to Buffalo has been a huge blessing for me and my family … These are my type of people," Sherfield told reporters Tuesday. "Guys who work hard and try to get better. This is in my DNA.
"There's a sense of urgency here. We're in a window and we have to execute. And I think a lot of guys feel that."
Additionally, the fact that Bills quarterback Josh Allen personally recruited Sherfield may have moved the needle as well. Sherfield revealed that he and Allen connected through Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Christian Kirk, a mutual friend, and the two immediately hit it off.
"When the Bills had called, I hit up Christian and I was like, 'Man, I need you to get me on the field with Josh and kind of just talk through some things," Sherfield said. "I got him on the phone and he said he was a big fan of mine and watched me play and all those type of different things, which I was surprised, but we hit it off really well. You would've thought that me and Josh had known each other for months on end the way that conversation went. But that's just a testament to the guy that he is.
Now in the preseason, Sherfield is getting the chance to show the Bills what he's made of on the field. In Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he made his first catch as a Bill in spectacular fashion, jumping up for a 21-yard gain.
With how at home Sherfield feels in Buffalo, he and the Bills hope it will be the first of many catches.
